Trails

As of March 2025, the Huntington Area Recreational Trails Association (HARTA) has made significant progress in expanding and enhancing the trail system in Huntington, Indiana. The city’s trail network now offers residents and visitors a variety of scenic routes for walking, biking, and running.

Recent Developments:

  • Erie Rail Trail Extension: In September 2024, the Erie Rail Trail was extended by 0.74 miles, thanks to a $784,300 grant from the Next Level Trails program. This 10-foot-wide shared-use path now connects Gragg Street, Stults Road, and County Road 500 North, linking key community locations such as Huntington University, Parkview Huntington Hospital, the YMCA, Crestview Middle School, and Heritage of Huntington Senior Living Center.
  • Trail Network Expansion: The extension of the Erie Rail Trail has increased the total trail mileage in Huntington to over eight miles, providing more opportunities for outdoor recreation and active transportation.
  • Schenkel Station: The Wabash Railroad Depot cargo building, generously donated by Jon and Shelly Schenkel, has been refurbished and now serves as the main hub for Huntington’s trail system. Schenkel Station features both internal and external gathering areas for trail users and houses a kiosk with a large trail map and a bike repair station.

Existing Trails:

  • Lime City Trail: Located on West Park Drive across from Huntington Nursery, this partially paved trail offers scenic views and a peaceful environment for trail users.
  • Evergreen Trail: A one-mile paved loop situated in Evergreen Park on Evergreen Road, providing a serene setting for walking and jogging.
  • Little River Trail: Once fully completed, this trail will stretch from the Historic Forks of the Wabash Park to the PAL grounds, totaling approximately 1.3 miles.
  • Old US 24 Trail: Branching off from the Erie Trail at the corner of Briant and Old US 24, this trail offers additional routes for exploration.
  • Etna Trail: Extending along Etna Avenue from Jessup Street to Waterworks Road, this trail connects various parts of the city.
